how inspired are you?
Ok, so I designed this project thinking it would be a pretty fun one…and so far I still have faith that it is! We’ve looked at words, sentences, text, copy etc. in many different ways already through reading, a worksheet and an exercise. Well now its time to shift gears a bit in order to get back in touch with our more creative side.
Have you ever thought about what it takes to create a typeface? If I asked you right now to sit down and create a typeface and describe to me in detail every single choice you made in it's design, would you be able to do it? Where do the designers responsible for creating typefaces draw their inspiration from, and how do they begin….furthermore, how do they describe them to others once they are completed in order to share their inspiration?
Relax…I’m not about to ask you to design a complete alphabet of original typefaces. However, we are going to start one! And this is how we are going to do it…

drawing letterforms
Have you ever drawn a letter for fun? Girls, I know you’ve drawn out your fair share of big, squishy adorable bubble letters, and guys, I know you all had fanciful aspirations of tattoo or graffiti art somewhere in your future. The thing with all of this is simple though…all of those are very basic attempts at the creation of type.
Start this project by sketching in your sketch book ONE insanely detailed letter. I don’t care what letter you choose or whether it is lowercase or uppercase. I just want you to take the time in order to do the very best that you are capable of. If that means getting a ruler out to help you with straight lines then do it! I’ve included a couple examples of what these might look like below.
You will be meeting with me in order to talk about where you began with your creation, and how you had come up with your ideas. I will also be asking you tell me about the challenges that you faced, or what you think you could have improved upon.
