do(s) & don't(s)
Things you want to DO:
1. You want to find a couple really good examples to model your work from. If you are having a hard time figuring out where to start, a great method is to look at other examples for inspiration. That doesn't mean that you are going to copy anyone else's work, but rather, you are going for the same kind of look. Remember, you are beginners, and it is ok to use this method as beginner students.
2. SKETCH! While it isn't mandatory, I highly recommend that everyone take some time out to sketch out where they want to go with this poster design, especially as you look through other galleries for inspiration. Sketching doesn't really feel natural at first...you think to yourself, "why am I doing this..." The thing is, every professional artist/designer starts with this step. Believe me, it definitely gets easier as you continue to practice it.
3. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO IMAGE SIZE/RESOLUTION WHEN LOOKING FOR ONLINE TEXTURES. Remember, we are working with large files with high resolution, so any image you find online should be very large as well. I have some resources under our class resource page that will provide a starting point for the search for some textures.
Things you DON'T want to do:
1. NEVER stretch a letter form (letters, numbers, symbols) by clicking and dragging out the horizontal or vertical side. ONLY resize by holding SHIFT down and clicking any of the corners. Letter forms are never to be distorted from their original proportions.
2. DO NOT use the VERTICAL TYPE function. This is a big design no-no, and is only used for very specific instances.
3. This project isn't about finding the "coolest" font online, but rather, the overall design of the poster. Any poster isn't hard to make, but making a well designed poster is. The initial process and the original ideas you come up with at the beginning are so important to doing this well.
4. DO NOT open up a photoshop file, and start pointing and clicking without a clue to the final look...this is how you will lose all your points for Execution, Detail, Effort and Instructions. Your work is to be inspired, direct and well though through. I am also a very valuable resource for this project, so make sure that you ask questions, and ask for feedback on your design ideas and process.
