Before we even get started tracing our portraits in Illustrator, there is some work to do in Photoshop…follow the step by step instructions below to get your image to where it needs to be. Click on the first picture and read the instructions below. You can click next on the picture to go on to the next image.
Once you have this picture completely done, look to the top of the Photoshop screen, select the LAYER menu, and choose FLATTEN IMAGE.
Next, go to the FILE menu, select SAVE AS, and change your FILE TYPE to .JPEG. Then name your image whatever you like, and make sure that either you or the computer has put the extension .JPG at the end of your file name. For example, it should look like thisè “my photo.jpg”
Have you made sure it looked just like that...ok, then click SAVE.
Create a new document in Illustrator that measures 8.5 inches by 11 inches, and name it "Your Last Name_portrait". Once this has opened up, go to FILE, and choose PLACE...place your image here. You are ready to get started! Lock that layer with your picture on it, and CREATE A NEW LAYER ABOVE. You will be using the pen tool to trace the picture, REMEMBER TO CLICK AND DRAG OUT THE HANDLEBARS ON EACH ANCHOR POINT....DO NOT POINT AND CLICK A MILLION TIMES!
