front/back cover due September 24
Both the front and back cover are to be completed simultaneously as one design. There are very specific dimensions, so make sure you stick to them… this is an easy way to lose points if you simply don’t follow directions. The front and back will measure 7 inches wide and 10 inches tall, and the spine will measure 1.5 inches wide (and obviously the same height). That makes a total width of 15.5 inches, and a height of 10 inches, and a RESOLUTION OF 300.
Your cover is to be completed in Adobe Photoshop, and has to include at least one form of texture/background. Let me be clear about this. If you use a photographic texture, that is, some kind of image that includes texture you find online, you must blend it with your design, it is not simply going to BE your design. If you find some sort of digital image (think of something that resembles a desktop wallpaper) that someone else has created and try to use that as your background, you receive a zero. You can include photographic elements in with your design, but only if they are incorporated with other ORIGINAL elements that you have designed. You will not be turning other people’s work as your own. Remember, I will be looking at all of your layers and work.
Front Cover
On the front of the cover, you will include your illustration, your title (and your subtitle if you have one) and who the book is by. Refer to the example I did for you to see what you need. Now, the right type setting and type size is so important to something like a book cover, so you are going to want to make sure you aren’t be super cheesy or cliché. Keep it simple, and triple check with me first. When looking at the examples below, pay special attention to the type of font they have chosen, the size of the font for different elements, and the placement on the cover.
Spine
The spine will include the title, the author and a ficticious publishing house called 'Titan Publishing'.
Back Cover
The synopsis you have previously written will be included on the back. Again, there are different layout options available as to where and how you place this synopsis, so don’t just throw it anywhere and call it a day. If you have concerns over this part, check with me about it. I will expect you to be able to show me different options you have come up with.
Again, this part will be a separate grade all together. You will be sending me your Photoshop file, not a JPEG file… I want to be able to access your layers.
