emphasis
When we think about the word ‘emphasis,’ we immediately think about something that grabs our attention—something that stands out and is immediately noticed. If we want a word to stand out amongst other words, we use things like CAPITAL LETTERS, or bold letters or maybe even a different color. In design, it is exactly the same principle fundamentally, yet has to be approached in such a way that works in accord with the other principles of design so as not to be overpowering or gaudy. For this project we are going to be creating a composition that exhibits this principle using only one basic shape.
This project has very specific guidelines, but within those guidelines, there are infinite ways in which you can approach this.
This project has very specific guidelines, but within those guidelines, there are infinite ways in which you can approach this.
The guidelines are as follows:
- You can only use one shape.
- You can use that shape as many times as you would like, in any scale and in any placement that you would like.
- You can use unlimited amount of SOLID color, plus black and white. No gradients, strokes, textures or patterns.
Begin by sketching out at least 3 different ideas with whatever colors you choose on using. I have colored pencils if you do not have your own. I expect the sketches to be clean, organized and professional (that means the use of rulers for many of you). You will present these sketches to me individually before moving on and creating your composition in Illustrator.
Next, start out by creating a standard, page size document in Adobe Illustrator (8.5 X 11 inches, and 300dpi). Before you click ok, make sure that you choose RGB as the color profile (this would be opposed to the default CMYK). Once you have created the document with those exact specifications, create the approved composition in strict accordance with the guidelines laid out for you above.
Lastly, once you have completed your project, you will SAVE your file as “YOUR_LAST_NAME_EMPHASIS.PDF”… You will be saving and sending your document as a PDF file. Once the final Dialog box opens to complete the process of saving, UNCHECK the box that says 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities'. That way, it will only send whatever you had within the bounding box of your page.
